Ministry in Africa has been a learning process for me. In Africa it’s people over schedule, they are laid back about time to say the least. Both of our host pastors have been phenomenal, but it’s taken a lot of adjusting to get into the swing of how ministry is done here. There are days when I feel like I could be doing so much more here. This gets me thinking about what this trip is really about, what ministry is, and what I’ve made it to be. I think the concept of “doing ministry” is a little limiting. Ministry, or bringing the kingdom, gets put into a time slot, and has a beginning and an end point. I don’t think we were created to live out our lives in a mind set of clocking in and out of ministry. Maybe this is just my issue.
I think if our lives are about abiding in Gods love, then out of an overflow of that the Kingdom should break out wherever it is that we go that day. I shouldn’t have to go to a prison and speak to a crowd to be “doing ministry.” If I’m living my life walking in the rhythm of the Holy Spirit, I can minister wherever I am. Easier said than done right. I see this in how Jesus lived, He loved all of the time, with all of Himself, and brought the Kingdom to earth wherever He went. Overflow….going back to intimacy, if I’m seeking the King with all of my heart, listening and responding to Him throughout the day, the overflow of my life will be the Kingdom. I want more of that, less of the things of the world taking up space in my heart and mind.
The Lord said this to me a few days ago, that ministry is like this: He invites us into the deep waters of His heart, and as we swim around, having the time of our lives, that splashes out onto others and invites them in. That water splashes onto the ground and brings forth life. The Kingdom comes. Just get in the water 🙂
