For those of you who may not know, I am a huge fan of suspense-action movies.  I absolutely love the Batman movies. The first one, Batman Begins, has been a favorite of mine for a long time. I can watch it over and over and never get tired of it.  I like it because it chronicles the beginnings of Batman and why Bruce Wayne takes on the persona of Batman.  He chooses Batman because it makes him embrace his fear of bats.  Alfred states, “Why bats, sir?” Bruce replies, “Bats scare me.” He chooses to face his fear head on in order to conquer it.

That’s why I am on this journey. Many things about this journey scare me: being away from my Daddy and Mommy, my brothers, my friends, and familiar places. Also not being able to do the things I would normally do at home like straighten my hair, dress up, wear high heels, TV, movies, cell phones, driving my car (I really, really miss driving my car with the T-Tops out!), my independence, playing a real piano, and my job.  It is hard to be away from all that is familiar, but I am growing closer to the God of the universe in the midst of unfamiliar countries and circumstances. I’m learning to embrace my God in the midst of my fears. Psalm 34 has spoken to me about how God wants us to come to him with our fears.

Psalm 34: 1-10
“I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continuously be in my mouth.
My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad.
Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together!
I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.
This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him and delivers them.
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!  Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack!
The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.”

I am excited to have this opportunity to embrace God and to be completely satisfied in Him.  I want to see how good the Lord is.  In the midst of my fears of the unknown, I want God to show me how good he is. That’s why Batman is my hero.
