One of my biggest fears about coming on the race was getting lice. It’s silly, I know, but in all honesty it just really grossed me out.
Well last week our team went to an orphanage to love on the kiddos – and about half of them had lice!
It happened as I was holding the cutest little girl. She grabbed onto me when we first got there and she would not let go, literally I could not get her off me. She was sitting on my lap while we were watching the kids play a game and I noticed her hair. There was a lot of white specks in it. A lot.
I was hoping it was just dandruff but it wasn’t. She had lice and she was scratching that head.
In that moment I knew that I could either get up and play with another little girl who didn’t have lice or I could take my chances, pray I didn’t get an itchy head infested with bugs and love her with all I had for the few hours we were there.
I choose love. And I’m so glad I did.
I held that sweet little princess the entire time. She only said one word, in Vietnamese, the entire time we were together but she held on tight and pointed to where she wanted us to go.
We played on the swing, we went down the slide, we walked around, we ate jack fruit, and she climbed up on my shoulders. And the only time she would laugh is if I tipped her upside down so we did that a lot too.
I never thought I would be thankful for lice and itchy heads but they reminded me that God and His love are bigger than any small circumstance in life. I was taught once again to look past what I saw and to see what God sees – a beautiful daughter who needs to be held, adored and loved.
A week later I’m happy to report that I do not have lice. Even if I did, I know it would be worth it because for a few hours that little girl didn’t have to think about the fact that she was an orphan. She just got to play and all I had to do was love her.
Love really is bigger than any obstacle when it comes from the love of our Father.
Take a risk and love others.
