Challenge received: Memorize 15 Bible verses from a pre-made list by our leadership team
Incentive: a nice dinner with our squad parents at debrief (includes dessert if we get all 30 of them down!)
I should not need an incentive to learn scripture since it should be a priority and passion of mine. I need to have God’s Word treasured in my heart and at the forefront of my mind. I had a huge conviction lately here in Africa taking my easy access to the Word of God for granted. I have my Bible with me along with two others back in storage and then coming here and seeing people having no availability to this great book or the ability to read it.
Our church service at the port is comprised of a few men who we recruit on Sunday morning and meet at a bar picnic table. We start with prayer and some accapella singing after greeting a handful of men in attendance. A man, not a woman, presents a story from the gospel and then asks a few of the men in attendance to repeat the summarized story. After we hear the story a few times translated in three different languages we move onto discussing some questions. What did they like, didn’t like, what they can take away from the story, etc. This way the gospel is presented is to help the men to be able to remember the story since they can’t simply go back and look it up or re-read it.
The trucker ministry usually has been able to pass out some Bibles to men they have lead to Christ or an SD card with the Bible uploaded on it to give to the ones who can’t read. What a way to pass the time on those long days in the truck!
Currently they do not have any SD cards or Bibles…could I ask in this season of giving if you have any leftover stocking stuffer money would you consider donating to gift these men who are coming to know the Lord with a Bible?
Bible costs 1500 franc which is only around $3! The SD cards range between $10-$15 a piece but fit right in their phones for unlimited access to the powerful message.
I am only here for another week so I would need to know your donation commitment by next Wednesday so I can make the purchases- just shoot me a message 🙂 You can give money to my mom or venmo me @Jenna-VanderHaar. Thanks in advance for helping me advance His Kingdom!
Fun Fact:
Street food is the way to go when you are on the run. From fruit to full meals, you can find pretty much anything along the side of the street.
Maybe for your lunch break you would pick up a roasted plantain with a baggy of peanuts all for less than a $1!
