The smell of sulfur, the steam eerily coming from the pool of green and the treacherous path of rocks was the result of a 2.5 hour hike one way (about 5 miles) up to the active volcano. There were moments of struggle and slipping feet, water breaks and pep talks but it was all worth it for the view at the top. I didn’t just get to cross another thing off the bucket list but also saw God in His creation and in our team.
There is something very true about the saying “It’s about the journey, not the destination.” We were only at the top for about a half hour before we had to start the trek back down…8% of our adventure was at the top enjoying the view we worked so hard to climb. During the trek we stuck together, encouraged one another and had time to just enjoy God’s beautiful creation. I had to be reminded to stick with the team when I got a bit too far ahead…that destination was on my mind. I had to ask God to walk humbly and enjoy the journey, my team, the views and experience.
“Not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, endurance produces character, and character produces hope. Now this hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”
