I love lists. I make lists about which lists I want to make. All about lists.
So, here's a list of why I love this country.
-
Kigali is clean! When we were driving in, one of the first things I noticed is that there isn't any trash anywhere. The people here love their country and want to keep it neat and tidy. Littering is not allowed.
-
Rain storms. As I type this, it is pouring outside. There is thunder and lightening. I love it because it reminds me of California. I actually showered, and shaved in the rain a few days ago. It was more fun than I would've assumed.
-
Motorbikes are used as an acceptable mode of transportation. There are motorbike taxis that cost next to nothing and are super fun to be on. Especially when there's a group of five or six mzungus racing and waving whenever they pass each other. Also, point 3.5 – they have helmets here. Way safer than other places. As an additional bonus, most of the helmets even have visors.
-
People in this country are friendly. They welcome you to Rwanda and tell you that they hope you enjoy it. I was actually stopped on the street once by a police officer who wanted to shake my hand. He was really nice. You, mzungu, are welcome in Rwanda. Please come visit.
-
Bourbon Coffee. It's basically a starbucks. I will admit that I haven't shaken my love of coffee or caffeine. The Race might be making it a smidge stronger, actually. A cappucino is still a fabulous thing, even in Rwanda.
-
Gorillas. I haven't seen any, and I don't think that I will, but I've heard they exist. Actually, there's apparently a super nice national park in Rwanda where you can track gorillas. If you have $500 and a lot of spare time. Neither of which I currently have. But gorillas are amazing and they remind me of Tarzan. I'm glad they live here.
-
There are volcanoes. Kind of like the gorillas, I haven't seen them nor do I believe I shall. But I like volcanoes. I used to live near Seattle and I miss seeing Mt. Rainier from my back porch. Mountains and volcanoes are beautiful.
-
People here speak English! And a lot of them know French. And then on top of those they know their own language, and often others. I am disappointed that I only know English, but I appreciate that I am able to communicate with them despite my lack of knowledge.
-
Kigali is full of hills. The countryside is beautiful.
- People LOVE JESUS! It's the best point. And definitely my favorite. We have spent our time preaching at church and doing evangelism. The majority of the people I have spoken to love Jesus and are encouraged that we do too. They enjoy hearing the Word of God; they are dedicated to prayer and worship and fellowship. It has been fantastic.
So there you have it. My top 10 reasons for why I love Rwanda.
