It was the late morning hours of Valentine’s Day, all of the z squad men were busy cooking for lunch and doing the ministry work the day in order for us women to have the opportunity to encourage one another. All of the Z ladies were relaxing in the Zahandi Missions, my ministry contact for the past two months, Bible school recalling the last month. Next thing I know, the girls sitting behind me shrieked, and a Iizard is flying in my direction. As I stumbled to my feet, the lizard then proceeded to crawl up my leggings underneath my chitange, an African, wrap skirt. As I stood there trying to untie my skirt to free the lizard from my leg, one of our guys come out of nowhere, untied my chitange, and the lizard finally falls to the ground. The room quickly moves from shock to laughter as tears of joy filled my eyes.

This was the most comedic but incredible start to Valentine’s Day that I have had in my entire life, and it happened here in Malawi, the warm heart of Africa. I know that it seems crazy to say that a lizard crawling into your skirt could be great, but The Lord has truly blessed the women of z squad with incredible men. It is cheezy that one of our men stepped in to save me from a lizard, but it is honestly a reflection of their heart is to serve us just as Christ did the church. Throughout the entire day, our men served us meals, retrieved water from the well, put on our own version of the Winter Olympics, bought us chocolate, wrote us cards, and ended the day by washing our feet. It was such a blessing to the heart of all of us z squad ladies to be served for an entire day by all of our men. This month has been difficult for everyone with limited showers, countless mosquito bites, illness, spiritual warfare, miscommunications, and homesickness. However, our men helped us see for a day just exactly how much Christ loves us and wants to pursue us. So, to all of you men out there, I suggest you take notes from all of our z squad guys. They are incredible men of God, and they sure know how to treat ladies right.
