“He who protests is an enemy; he who opposes is a corpse.” -Pol Pot
Only about 42 years ago a genocide occured in Cambodia. 1.5 million people were killed under the Communist Khmer Rouge led by Pol Pot.
We visited S-21, a high security prison in which victims were often tortured until they confessed to a crime they didn’t even commit, before facing imminent death. I won’t go into detail of the brutality that took place, but it was heart wrenching to learn of. As we drove from the prison to the killing fields I thought of all the people who made that last trip blindfolded and afraid, unable even to speak or cry out.
Of 20,000 people in S-21 only 7 survived. I got to meet 2 of them, one who lost his wife in this tragedy. It was hard for me to even imagine the things their eyes have seen. They were very friendly and eager to share their stories.
Thankfully, even in light of something so awful, we can trust in God’s goodness knowing that He is both sovereign and just and that evil won’t last forever.
“Look God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” -Revelation 21:3-4
May we always remember the precious lives that were lost and be people who choose love.
