“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus” – Philippians 4:19
I love this verse, I love that I think of this verse whenever I hear that story about the drowning man. You know the one, a man is drowning in the ocean and calling out for God to save him, a ship comes by and offers a life preserver and the man says, “No thank you, God is going to save me!”. Then another boat passes and tries to help but again the man declines saying he is waiting on God. After he dies and is in Heaven the man asks God why he never helped and God replies “I sent two boats!!”.
I love that this verse makes you slow down and read and understand God will provide according to HIS riches, not your own. Sometimes he sends a boat and we miss it because we’re looking for something else. I think of this verse and story often right now as I am in the midst of fundraising. $16,000+ is a HUGE amount for me and even though I know God will provide, I fight against what that looks like almost everyday. I’d love to write this blog and tell you that I love fundraising, that it’s easy because it’s a part of the journey God has called me to but the truth is. . . . (I’m gonna say what you’re not supposed to say) I hate it! Not because I don’t have faith that God will provide but because it highlights the ugly, prideful part of me that I sometimes (most times) try to hide. I am that drowning man and when I call out for God to help me, I want Him to give me strength to swim to that island 500 miles away, not send a boat that requires me to ask for and receive help. How ridiculous is that?! That’s why I love this verse, it calls me back to Him and reminds me that His riches in glory in Christ Jesus are so much more than I could ever even think to ask for, it reminds me that when I abandon that prideful self, He has people surround and support me in ways that inspire and humble me. Most of all, it reminds me that it is NOT about me, it is about Him and how He demonstrates how loving, mighty, gracious, powerful and worthy He is to not just me, but everyone who surrounds me and everyone I get the chance to minister to over the next year!
