I am not a slave.

I am not bound to rituals, superstitions, or rules of how to worship. I am free from fear and the pressures of today’s culture. I am free from trying to be someone I am not. God is a creator, not a duplicator. Because of this, I am free to be satisfied with how He created me and rejoice in the talents and gifts he gave me. I will not be perfect and I am ok with that.

Why?

Because I am a son of God.

I have a relationship with Christ. Not because I was told to, but because I desire to know my heavenly father better. I have the freedom to be who I am. I follow His commands because I desire to please Him. It is not a burden. It is not a hassle. I don’t HAVE to go to church, read my Bible, pray, or seek fellowship with other believers. No, I don’t have to, but I want to. This desire does not lead to a life of restrictions, but a life of joy and freedom. I am an heir to the throne and will inherit the kingdom of God. I will share in his sufferings so that I can share in his glory.

Since I am God’s son, I should have faith like a child.

I want to know Him better. I want to have the excitement of a child in desiring to spend time and learn more about Him. I want to trust Him in all circumstances like a young child does his/her parents. He gave us the Bible to help us in this process. It is a gift to have the ability to seek Him as He reveals Himself in scripture.  Every day I read the Bible and learn something new. The words in the Bible have never been more real and living as they have been in the last four months. I am not just reading about things, but I am experiencing and learning how to put them into action.  Just like small children are excited to boast about their parents, I am free to boast about my heavenly father. I want everyone to meet and spend time with Him.  Because I am a child of God, I need to be submissive to Him.  I need to obey Him.  My freedom does not give me free reign to do evil.  My submissiveness to God allows me to give glory to Him as my authority.  But like a good parent, His authority is based in love and He is continually molding us into who He wants us to be.  We just need to let Him.  He knows what’s best for me even when things don’t seem to make sense.

I am a son of God.

And what makes it even better? We are ALL sons and daughters of God and can have that freedom.

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery”. – Galatians 5:1

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light”. – Matthew 11:28-30

“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” – 1 John 3:1a

This is a subject that we find ourselves discussing with the students here. This is because many of them describe themselves as Muslim simply because they were born into it and are aimlessly following in the “requirements” of the religion. They feel that all religions are the same. We explain how Jesus Christ died for our sins and how we now have freedom in Him.  Rituals and good works mean nothing without faith and a relationship with Christ.  Once we have that relationship, the good works become part of who we are and are no longer deeds to please a master.  They become traits to please a father.

“Missions is not a recruitment project for God’s labor force. It is a liberation project from the heavy burdens and hard yokes of other gods”. – John Piper
