First, a quick update on what we did for New Year’s.  We spent New Year’s Eve night sitting outside around a fire while talking, grilling, and spending some time in prayer.  We also had communion and it was just a cool way to kick off the new year.

As far as ministry goes, we have continued to do manual labor around the house grounds.  We have helped build a porch and did some more gardening.  One day, while building the porch, we had been shoveling dirt all day long and we were exhausted by the time we had to go get another load.  The normal routine consisted of us shoveling the loose dirt from the side of the road into the back of a truck.  Well, for the last load, we decided to drive down the road a little ways to where they were doing some construction.  We asked the bako driver if he could dump a load in our truck and so he did.  Only in Africa.  Needless to say it saved us a lot of work!

Now for a little fun.  On Thursday I was able to cross off a thing on my bucket list that I have always wanted to do.  My team, along with Louis and Erika, went on an African safari!  We left the house at 4:45am so that we could be exploring by 6am.  I know that’s crazy early, but well worth it.  When we arrived, we boarded an open aired jeep and were driven into the bush.  We were able to enjoy the natural African landscape while keeping our eyes open for any animals we could see.  It was comparable to driving through any American national park and searching for things like bear or moose.

In the morning we drove around for two hours and saw some zebras, giraffes, warthogs, impala, wildebeests and some other deer-type things.  It was so cool to see these animals doing their natural thing in this environment.  Even though we saw all of those animals, we really were on the search for some elephants and lions.  We were told that it is rare to see those two and that it was hit or miss most of the time with them.

After a breakfast at the lodge, we started off into the bush for another three hours.  This time, however, with even more emphasis on seeing an elephant or lion.  About an hour and half into it, our driver decides to drive of the path about a quarter mile to search for lions.  As we were driving slowly through the shrub and trees we finally spotted two female lions chilling beneath some shrub.  Success!  It was such a cool moment to see them.  Well that was my safari experience.  We never did see elephants but it was still a day that I will never forget.  I do have a video made of the experience so I hope to post it as soon as I can get internet for long enough.

On another note, we will be leaving for Mozambique on Wednesday.  We will be in the town of Chibuto and working with an organization called “Africa on Fireâ€ and we will be doing anything from house visits to working with kids.  Our internet situation may be the same as this month so you may not hear from me in a while.

We are sad to leave the people here, but we will always be thankful for their support and friendship.  Beam Africa is making a tremendous difference in the local community and I know that God has great plans for them in this new year.

Love you all!!
