We are in The Graveyard for Missionaries. Dragonesti-Olt of Romania has been given this title because of the numerous missionaries who have visited this area only to leave faster than they had planned. The hearts of the people are hardened and turned away from the Gospel. I wish I could say that an Apathetic attitude is the most difficult part about this area, but I would be lying. There is a dark spiritual presence in this town that is most likely tied to the evident practice of witchcraft and voodoo curses. We are at war.
During sleep, I was visited by a demon.
It was about 2 a.m. and I woke up because the dogs in our backyard were frantically barking. As I tried to open my eyes, I felt as if I was literally being pressed down and constrained. Still in somewhat of a lucid state, I could feel a wicked presence outside our bedroom. Through the window beside my bed, I saw a tall dark figure standing in our backyard with an outstretched arm. I looked away and tried to call for help, but I was still paralyzed. No words could escape from my lips. For a moment, I tried breathing heavily to gain the attention of my roommates, but they were fast asleep. Then I knew exactly what I needed to do. I put all focus and effort into calling on God. It took everything I had to speak the first letter. Then the second. After the third, I used what little breath I had within me to muster up Jesus’ name. I cannot describe it well enough with my limited vocabulary, but as soon as I spoke “Jesus” I was released. Peace filled my soul. I sat up immediately and began to pray, crying out to God. The dogs, which had been gnarling and barking the entire time, stopped. The backyard was empty and my roommates were fast asleep. So I spent the rest of the night in prayer for protection over our squad.
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” – Ephesians 6:12
This encounter was the night immediately after our trip to Greece. It was also after one of the greatest days of my life. This is because on that day, I got to baptize my friend Doug. We proclaimed to the World that Jesus Christ claimed victory over our souls the day he rose from the grave! I was reminded that God is using us to bring life to this so called, “Graveyard for Missionaries.” In the name of Jesus Christ, we rebuke that name given to this area. We partner with the local churches here and commission them to be springs of living water to this land.
In the name of Jesus Christ, we also rebuke and cast down the wicked spirit that dared to visit me, a child of God, during my sleep. I’m so thankful for that experience because it reminded me of the battle at hand. I also can’t help but be motivated by the power of God to make a wicked spirit powerless and disappear at the mention of Jesus’ great name. The night following this experience, I slept like a rock surrounded by the presence of the Lord. A few days after that, I got to witness a soul accept Jesus Christ into her heart in this same house! God has also given me the following verse:
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” -2 Timothy 1:7
