This month in Costa Rica, we were in the town of Jaco. Jaco is a small surf town during the day and a party town at night. We had many different ministries we got to work with this month. We fed the homeless once a week in the park. There would be a short sermon, feeding, then afterwords we would talk and pray with them. We also did prayer walks every Friday night. Jaco is big in drugs and prostitution and has alot of foreigners there looking for a good time. On Friday nights we would go and pray at the spots where the prostitutes hang out at by the bars. There is also a lot of transvestites in Jaco. The women that lead the prayer walks have started forming relationship with them. It’s a slow process and discouragement is common, so please keep them in your prayers.
My favorite part of ministry this month was working with multiple ministries. Though these ministries were seperate, they were unified to serve Jaco. The staff of these ministries often spent their days off serving with other ministries.
Another favorite thing was building a realtionship with Enrique. I met him during a construction day at Casa Fe. After that, we kept running into each other and he even spent one of his days off hanging out with us. It was really cool to see God pursuing him in his everyday life. He moved from Nicaragua a month ago and is looking to stay in Jaco for a year. He wants to make as much money as he can for when he returns to Nicaragua. Please pray that he keeps working for the construction company that has Christian men pouring in to him. He needs discipleship and the men at the construction company can do that.
Case Fe is a youth outreach program in Jaco. They lend surf boards and games to give them a safe place to hangout. They do Bible studies, English classes, cooking classes for girls, and overall just love them like they would if they were their own kids. These youth see a disconnect between Church and everday life. Case Fe hopes to connect those two and show them what it looks like to have a relationship with Jesus.
And surfing was awesome. Pura vida!
