Hey guys–

My church is doing a 31 days of prayer in October, and this is today’s. It was so good that I wanted to share it– wouldn’t it be cool if we were to start praying these things for each other? Like, in general now, and then maybe once we get our mini teams or whatever, the smaller groups of 6-8, we could pray for the people there specifically by name?

A year of praying these things, and having others pray for us, would probably yield some pretty powerful results. Not to mention it would lead to some RIDICULOUS team unity!

Ok, I’m done rambling (but not posting things– I’m taking the day off because I’m sick, and I’m looking up verses and stats and sermons). 🙂

Day 12: Praying For Fruit!
by Will Pavone, Director of Couples Small Groups at MBC Tysons and Frontline Small Groups

And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father. Colossians 1:9b-12a

Here in Paul’s wonderful letter to the Colossians, he is praying that these believers would become fully devoted followers of Christ. Now I’m sure many of us have prayed about our own spiritual growth but have you ever prayed for someone else’s? Notice the four participles Paul uses to expresses what it looks like to live a life that pleases the Lord.

  1. Bearing fruit–in every good work
  2. Growing–in the knowledge of God
  3. Being strengthened–with all power according to his glorious might
  4. Giving thanks–with joy to the Father

These marks of spiritual growth form the content and the goal of the prayer Paul is praying for the Colossian believers. Take time today and pray through these marks on the list. Pray that these things would be evident in your own life by the power of the Spirit. Pray also for others in your life, that they would be increasingly bearing these marks too.

Father, we thank you for the way scripture can inform the prayers that we pray. We thank you for your goodness and mercy that we are so undeserving of and we ask that you would continue to solidify your word in our hearts in order that we may bear much fruit for the sake of the gospel. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Take Action: Today, pray specifically for spiritual growth for someone you know.
