Whoever said the Christian life was boring was dead wrong! This month we have two different ministries going on- one in the day (helping out at a coffee shop and ministering to college students) and another during the night -we go to different bars in the “Red Light District” here in Chang Mai. So I went to the bars on Tuesday night and let me tell you- there is no way that being a Christian is boring! We (Me, Melina, and Jordan) went to three different bars that night. To give you all an idea of how we do the bar ministry, we pray about which bars to go into and which girls to talk to. The once we go in, we order a soda, coffee, tea, etc. and then we just start to talk to the girls that are in there and hopefully build some relationships with them. We go into these bars being light in the darkness and showing them that there is something different about us. The goal is to find one or two bars and go there each night to build trust and relationships.

So the first one we went into none of the girls even came by us or were close enough to talk to, but it was a good starting point for me. I have never been in the bar setting before so it was nice to take in the sndings and start to get use to them. Then we went into another bar and got our soda and water and sat down. Some of the girls chatted with us for a couple minutes but nothing really connected yet. We seemed to connect more with the girl sitting behind the bar and got to know her a little bit. It was at this bar that it really hit me what we were here for. There was a girl next to me with a guy and I watched as he slowly got closer and closer to what he wanted to do with her. Here, guys come in for a drink and of course wanting something more and the girls talk with them and let the men buy them a drink. Then if all goes well the man will take the girl back to the hotel/whatever.  It is very subtle of how it all works. Well God really broke my heart for this particular girl and really showed me what exactly we are here for- to show these girls that they are worth more than what a guy will pay for them (which is about $8 U.S. dollars). That they are loved by God- that they are His beloved, His chosen ones, His precious, precious daughters. We go into these bars to love on these girls and talk and play games with them. We are there just to be with them and to love them- not to get anything out of them or use them or just want to treat them like everyone else does. It is so easy to love these girls and I can only hope that all they see is God’s love shining through us!

So the third bar we went into that night was the one that fell in love with!! As soon as we walked in one of the ladies, Mu, sat us down and immediately brought us the game Connect Four.  We ordered our tea and coffee and then Tu came over as well and they both started to play Connect Four with us. Tu is one of the lady boys (the boys who dress up like girls) and I immediately fell in love with them both! It is so amazing how God knows exactly what bar we need to go into and what girls/people we need to love on. So for the rest of the night Mu and Tu were basically with us and played Connect Four. We did not talk that much about anything, but words here and there, but it was mainly about showing them that we were not there for any purpose but to just be their friends. There was a girl at a table near us who was with a guy and she kept looking over at us like she would rather be with us instead of what she was doing. God really opened up my eyes to see that when these girls see us come in they can tell we are different and that we bring relief with us- even if only for a couple hours. They do not have to worry about entertaining or about being used, but they can just relax and have some fun without worrying about what they might have to do later that night.

The amazing thing was that it was not forced. These girls wanted to be with us and it just felt natural to talk with them and be around them! Another cool thing that happened that night was that the owner actually came to our table and we chatted with him for a couple minutes. Some of the girls on our team want a tattoo and the owner’s friend does them, so he was telling us all about it. It was amazing to see how God orchestrated all of this together and now we are starting to build a relationship with the owner as well! You never know who you will be planting seeds in and who God is trying to reach!

Please be keeping Mu, Tu, and the rest of the girls and other people we will be ministering to in your prayers. Please be praying for their safety and protection and open hearts towards us. Also be praying for us for wisdom and discernment as to who to talk to, what to say as well as what not to say!
