Imagine walking down the street and being stared at by all who pass you by. From the neighborhood kids waving and hollering “hi’s” and “how are you’s,” to the ladies at your Zumba class and the kids at VBS wanting to take selfies with you. All this because you are an “Americano.” My team and I are only the second group of Americans to ever come to Bulacan, Philippines. The first group was another squad who was here just last month and so this was our experience.
In many ways, our experience as “celebrities” here reminded me of Jesus and how wherever we went He had crowds following Him. However, He didn’t have followers because of his identity as a Nazareth, instead it was because of the signs and wonders He performed. John 6:2 says, “And a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick.”
This verse presented a challenge for me. To be known for where I live, but for who lives in. If I leave Bulacan with the only thing people knowing about me is that I’m an American, then I haven’t fulfilled my purpose here. I want to leave here with people knowing I came as a missionary to share the good news about Jesus with them. I want them to see passed me and see the Jesus in me.
I want to present this challenge to you as well. Challenge yourself to be known not for where you live, but for who lives in you. Challenge yourself to be light wherever you go. That wherever you go, whoever you meet, may know Jesus because of you. Remember, you may be the only example of Jesus people may ever see.
