Just last Thursday we had our first week of VBS (Vacation Bible School)! For those of you who don’t know what VBS is, it’s basically a weeklong event for kids full of games, songs and stories about Jesus. Because I love little kids so much, I volunteered to lead the 2-7 year olds. The majority of them were calm, which was surprising, but of course we had a couple of runaways. One of them being three-year-old Dave. Let me tell you a little bit about him. Picture a little Filipino boy who although he’s missing some teeth, has the most radiant smile. He’d take off in a flash in the middle of Story time or any chance he got and then expect me to chase him. He was a force to be reckoned with! The first few times I did chase him or one of the youth would, but after a while, I told them to stop chasing him to see what he would do.
One day, maybe because we stopped chasing after him, he sat by the lake right behind where we were having story time. He started picking up rocks and throwing them into the water. I went over and sat next to him and began throwing rocks with him. From time to time he’d look over at me smiling and say something in Tagalog. Although I didn’t understand him and he couldn’t understand me, it was okay. The laughs and smiles we shared didn’t need translation. At that moment I thought of Jesus and His constant pursuit of us. God continually chases after us when we leave His path, but there will come a time where He’ll stop chasing us just to see what we’ll do. When we finally stop running from Him, He’ll meet us right where we are. He may talk or maybe you will, but sometimes there won’t be any need for words, but just simply enjoying each other’s company.
For those of you who were curious about what he looks like, Here he is. Isn’t he a cutie?
