Most Racers on I-Squad spent $500+ on supplies, gear, and clothing to prepare for launch. I’m guessing I spent around $1,000. That’s just insane!

Future racers, here are some tips to save you so money and space in your bags!

TIP ONE: HEAVY PACKS = OUCHIE!

You have 60-hour train rides and long walks with your backpacks to look forward to. The lighter your bag, the better. You’ll find out fast that steps are hard to climb and your back will hurt pretty quickly the heavier your bag!

Your bag will become a bench.

TIP TWO: AIRLINES WON’T LET OVERWEIGHT BAGS THROUGH

Most airlines have a maximum weight of 40 pounds for bags and you’re usually allowed one bag. So don’t be one of those racers who holds up the entire squad when your bag is overweight and you have to redistribute to your daypack and three other people’s daypacks. BE PREPARED!

TIP THREE: DON’T PACK FOR THE ENTIRE 11 MONTHS

For some reason, I thought that I needed to pack a year’s worth of things. I assumed there wouldn’t be grocery stores or pharmacies along the way. I pictured tent cities and farm country. So I packed a year’s worth floss, five packages of baby wipes, 500 q-tips, four toothbrushes and triples and quadruples of a lot of things.

Trust me, you’ll be able to find most necessities along the way and most of the time, the exchange rates are really good and you end up saving a lot of money.  Unless you’re picky, a month’s worth is usually enough.

TIP FOUR: BUY WINTER GEAR WHEN YOU GET THERE.

I –Squad spent month one through three in Africa, spent four in China, five in the Philippines, six in Romania, and will spend seven in Romania. China and Romania have been cold and Ukraine will be chilly!

We found all of our winter gear in China for CHEAP and all of it was really cute! Gloves for $1, scarves for $2, and coats for $15.

TIP FIVE: BORROW.

I love shopping. I love the smell of new things and the feel but I still wish I would have borrowed things.
I would consider borrowing a tent, backpack, and a sleeping bag if you have the option. Congrats, you just saved almost $500!
