So my Squad is doing this I guess you could call it challenge, where we are fasting from or doing something different each week. Some of the previous weeks gave included no coffee. No noise when I go to sleep. Drinking only water. Reading the Bible for an hour every day. No TV.

And the point of fasting is to challenge yourself. To show that Jesus is more important than material things in your life.  Well most of the things I have done have not been too difficult. The no coffee and only water. That was a synch.  This last week was TV. Oh man that was a toughie. Not that I watch TV too much, but it is always on. As background noise mainly.

And in the upcoming weeks, I am fasting from Facebook for a week and then from my cell phone for a week. I already know that those weeks are going to be miserable. Ugh. So not looking forward to them.

I was thinking about this, and on my past trips. I didn’t miss TV. I didn’t miss Facebook. I didn’t miss my phone. I will be fine without them once on the mission field. I mean I will miss communicating with people at home and watching my favorite shows, but they won’t mean nearly as much as the job God has called me to do.

At home, It is more difficult to fast from these things because they are readily available and pretty much distractions.  Without TV this past week, I read the Bible so much more than I usually do. Though I missed TV, I had a lot more productive of a week and I know the same will happen with my no Facebook and no cell phone weeks.

It is when you put away the distractions and those things that take precedence over the Lord that your life truly starts to become fulfilled and purpose driven.
