On The World Race, you experience situations that make it easy to complain. It’s easy to complain when there’s no air conditioning in the 100-degree weather. It’s easy to complain when you hate every article of clothing in your pack. It’s easy to complain when you’re sick of the food, and you miss home.
It’s easy.
To prevent the Negative Nancy’s, we play a little game called “The Thankful Game”. To play, you simply state what you’re thankful for in times of stress. The funnier, the better.
Here are a couple of statements that have been said (not all are from myself):
1. “I’m thankful that if need be, I have to the ability to poop in the shower.”
2. “I’m thankful that I’ll have killer thighs after using this squatty potty so much.”
3. “I’m thankful that I’m not walking up this mountain with an extra 70 pounds of gear strapped on my body.”
4. “I’m thankful that this bus has air conditioning… even if it is coming out of a hole the size of a dime.”
5. “I’m thankful that it’s cold enough at night to need a wool blanket.”
6. “I’m thankful for cold showers that literally take my breath away.”
7. “I’m thankful for deodorant.”
8. “I’m thankful for shoes that can cause blisters on my feet.”
9. “I’m thankful that it’s not raining.” (while walking miles with all of our gear on in hottttttt weather)
10. “I’m thankful for baby wipes. Amen.”
11. “I’m thankful that God blessed me with legs to be able to walk with, and for kankles, because that means I have ankles….. somewhere. Yeah, I’m thankful for kankles.”
So, when you start to feel like a Negative Nancy, play the thankful game! It’s bound to end in laughter.
