I was watching a movie with my family last weekend, and watching it made me start having a wandering thought. “How do people have to change to make this world a better place?”
In the movie, the main antagonist thought that humans were helpless in being able to change themselves for achieving world peace. The antagonist talks about the trivial desires that the humans have, and how the majority of the world is consumed with selfish intentions.
God put us on this earth for a purpose and reason, but most people live out their lives without knowing it. In today’s world we are taught to live out our life for ourselves from the day we were born. People have this ideal that this will bring them true happiness and they will have a bright future. But that’s not God’s purpose or reason why we’re here. Selfish intention brings exactly the opposite. This is one of the reasons why today’s world is in so much pain. In the book of James 3:16 it says, “For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.”
One way to change the “disorder” that is born in this world is to live a godly life. God wants us to experience and feel the love that he has stored for us. God gives each of us a fundamental desire to have him in our life, and only through him can that desire be filled. Most people don’t realize this, and they try to find other ways to fill this emptiness they have in their heart. Other methods of finding joy only bring happiness temporarily, and therefore they keep seeking for more. This ultimately leads to destruction in their life. When having God as your foundation, you won’t have the need to search anymore.
The searching journey is over and now you can prepare to build the life God has for you. To do that, we need to realize the other part we need to change in ourselves. Not only do you have to place God’s intentions before yours, but we are also called to consider others as more important than ourselves. Many believers understand putting God first in their life, but only a handful know how to put others before themselves. As it says in Matthew 22:37-39, “Jesus said ‘you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: Love your neighbor as yourself.’” If people would have the desire to live that lifestyle, the world would start to transform into a place that the son of Man would gladly return to.
Unfortunately greed has corrupted people’s soul. People focus on only pleasing and achieving things for themselves. Even people who call themselves “Believers” often don’t realize how they’re being overtaken by earthly values. I used to be one of them. Things such as having the best grades, getting a high paying job, or owning an expensive house belong to this mundane world. Why strive for something that is only temporal when you could obtain what’s eternal. We should live for people’s happiness, not for our own. The way to achieve this is to actually want to live for others in your heart. To have your interests be the interests for others. Jesus even said that it’s EQUALLY important to love everyone just as much as you love God. This World Race trip I’m going to take will help show people that there are people who still put other’s before themselves and that the foundation that we built it on was with our Father in heaven. Helping people believe that is one of my true desires when I’m on this trip.
