Each movie that we soak up, each
book that we read, each person that we talk to has the power to change our life
forever. What a concept. You start out this morning and by the evening, your
life is different- you are different. Not much has happened except that
somehow, during that day, the way that you view the world has shifted and
become more personal. You are still you, but more. Like a diamond that,
when turned, reveals a new brilliance and shine. God is truly amazing in how He
shares Truth with us.
Let me share with you my own diamond, my own experience of finding within the
coursing images of a movie, a truth so real that my life’s direction was
forever altered. The movie was The Dead Poet’s Society and the character was
Mr. Keating, a beloved teacher who recognizes the potential of his students and
refuses to accept the normal way of teaching. His desire was to challenge his
students, to make them look at life in an entirely new and unique way, full of
wonder and anticipation.
He reminded me of Jesus.
I wanted that. I wanted to be able to impact the lives of
people in a meaningful way that challenged them to live different than the
world around them. So I became a teacher and it has made quite the difference
in me, as well as the students that I have had. I see God’s talents for me
being played out in ways that I never would have imagined ten years back.
But that’s how it seems to happen; unaware we pop in a
movie, or settle down in a cozy chair with a book and our lives are forever
changed. I know that my diamond is a little rough still, but it is also
beautiful and still reflects the light of Truth.
