Let me guess, you don’t like my title?

How about this one…

“If you’re overweight, you’re not beautiful.”

You don’t like that one either? And you don’t agree?

You think it’s stupid and untrue that you’re more lovable if you weigh less and you don’t believe anyone would ever believe that?

Well that’s strange because every day millions and millions of people believe those two things I just said.

Millions!

In fact, I’m quite positive a vast majority of people reading this post believe they’d be more lovable if they weighed less.

Don’t worry, this post is not about weight loss. It’s about the lies we believe about life and ourselves.

A week or so ago, I had a conversation with a squad-mate and she said:

“…When I say the lies out loud, they sound crazy and yet I TRULY believed them. Lies such as “You’re more lovable if you weigh less” and “If you are overweight, you’re not beautiful. Stupid, right? And yet they plagued my sense of worth and value for most of my life.”

She could not be any more right could she?

Isn’t it amazing how stupid the lies we believe sound when we say them out loud?

Today’s challenge is not easy but simple. Say the lies you believe out loud and let us tell you how stupid they sound.

You are NOT stupid but the lies we believe are and sometimes you just need to say them out loud to see that. Sometimes you just need someone to say…

“Uuhhhh, that doesn’t really make sense. Why would your weight determine how much love you deserve!?”

I’m convinced that most insecurities that plague us are silly lies that we picked up somewhere. My hope today is that we expose those lies together. But we have to say it out loud first.

So me first…

1. If I don’t write a really good blog every single time, people will stop reading my other blogs, they won’t experience Jesus and we will never grow.

2. I’m now “that guy.” Don’t believe me? (CLICK HERE) People will probably start avoiding me when I get back to the states because people that go on mission trips don’t like to have fun. They pray and read the Bible all day, right?.

3. I went on a year-long mission trip, punched an old guy ina China Walmart (CLICK HERE) , went commando for Jesus (CLICK HERE), threw a crying baby from a plane (CLICK HERE), and cried more than I want to admit (CLICK HERE) and all of it can be found with a simple internet search? I’m never getting a job now!

Phew. How stupid do those sound!? Glad I got it out.

Your turn. Say it out loud.

What are some “stupid” lies you’re tempted to believe about yourself?

Note from Jamal: I have a feeling this is going to resonate with many people. I know this topic is kinda heavy but I also think that this blog could be space for people to take baby steps with the lies. Even if you have to leave the comment as anonymous (and in some cases, I recommend), I encourage you to share it.

In addition, please read Psalm 139:14 if you have any questions. And if it doesn’t make any sense…read it again!

Please, please, please share this with someone you know.
