“I got this! I can fix anything! I am a resourceful agent with encyclopedic knowledge of science, able to solve complex problems with everyday materials that I find at hand, along with my ever-present duct tape and Swiss Army knife.”

Ok, I’m not MacGyver but that’s what I tell myself before I start “fixing” something.

I don’t know what it is about me…actually yes I do. My pride always gets the best of me and I never want to spend any money or have someone (usually qualified to do so) actually fix it for me.

“Why is the toilet STILL running? It’s been running for like…3 days now.”
“The car is leaking some black stuff on the driveway. What’s going on?”
“Why isn’t the Wii showing up on the TV?”
“(@ AT&T) So, it costs $20 to have someone install wi-fi in my house!? Uuhh…how much does it costs if you just send it to me? Oh..It’s free! Ok, let’s do that. Just send it to me and I’ll do it myself for free.”
“Why isn’t my computer detecting the wi-fi?”
“Why are all the lights off on this side of the house?”
“Why is the ink not coming out of this pen?”

The list goes on and on…

It doesn’t matter how “big” or “small” the problem…I ask the questions and then I have an answer to fix it!

After making a few trips to Best Buy or Home Depot for supplies to fix the problem, I usually end up calling someone more QUALIFIED to fix what I did, and ultimately, fix the ORIGINAL problem. They usually have some formal training. (Think Geek squad. I don’t know how, but they just know EVERYTHING about computers, right!?)

The fascinating part of this story is…I end up doing exactly what I set out not to do…spend money!

I burned gas driving to BestBuy (a few times) to “fix” the same problem.
I burned gas driving to Home Depot (a few times) to “fix” the same problem.
I spent money on tools that I don’t know how to use. Don’t judge me…it sounded easy when the salesman was explaining it to me at Home Depot.

Here’s what I learned…If you don’t position yourself in the “right,” it will never be right. The danger is that we sometimes tinker and try to fix things that we are not qualified to fix.

Am I the only “mechanic” in the world? What are you trying to “fix” and it’s not going EXACTLY according to plan? Jobs? Friendships? Being Single/Relationships? Marriages/Divorces? School? Financial Situations? Body Image Struggles? Position/Title stuggles? Is your toilet still running too? etc. ….I thought I would give you a few suggestions just in case, you didn’t know where to start. 🙂
