First things first, modesty isn’t what you think it is. Modesty is in all actuality true freedom, not confinement. The world has made the “M” word sound like a restricted area with no room for a woman’s creativity or freedom. But the truth is, when modesty is a decision motivated by the heart, it is the complete opposite.
If you are a Christian female, “NEWS FLASH,” you signed up for this the day you accepted Christ into your heart. On that day your body became a temple. Let this sink in — a sacred temple — a set apart dwelling place for the Holy Spirit.
Here is some scripture to give you a biblical foundation on this topic. If your heart feels convicted, remember that it is the Holy Spirit nudging your comfort zone, not the outspoken gal who rambled this blog together.
“I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.” -1 Timothy 2:9-10
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” -1 Corinthians 6:19-20
“Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” -1 Peter 3:3-4
“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” -1 Corinthians 10:31
“Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” -2 Timothy 2:22
With that said, here are the five things I have learned:
- Modesty is FREEDOM! Freedom from the slavery of trying to get people’s attention solely by your physical appearance. Freedom from the slavery of trying to deck yourself out in name brands to impress others and/or fit in & feel accepted. Freedom from conforming to every dadgum fashion sex appeal trend that throws up all over Tumblr and Instagram and those deceitful little things called magazines.
- It’s about the heart, in all reality. It’s about the presence of the Holy Spirit living on the inside of you and how much you honor the truth that your body is a temple, and how sincerely mindful you are of the One indwelling that space.
- Modesty isn’t all about covering up. It’s about carrying yourself in a virtuous manner. It’s about agreeing with what God says is true about you, about your worth, about your identity, but also believing it and walking it out. You were chosen by God to be an ambassador for Christ before time — before high waisted, cutoff, cheeky shorts were ever a thing.
- Modest is the hottest. But really, if you’re a gal looking for your Boaz please know that a sincere man of God is not going to pursue any sort of butt cheek hanging out of any sort of clothing. Trying to show as much skin or boobage as possible is not the best way to catch yourself a keeper, its more like having “DON’T PURSUE ME” written across your forehead.
- Modesty is also actually caring. Like sincerely caring about your brothers in Christ and their walk with the Lord along side you. It’s about protecting their growth as men of God by not being a stumbling block for their eyes. It’s much deeper than just covering up so the boys can’t see your goodies. It goes to the depth of being deeply mindful and caring of their heart struggles as men. It’s a manner of selflessly serving your brothers well.
