We’ve all been there. We’ve all hit a point in life (or multiple points) when we think, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” It’s our way of remaining positive, being Mr. Brightside, a “the glass is half full” mantra. It’s a coping mechanism intended to remind us that with the right touch something sour can be undeniably sweet.
I am not denying the truth behind the statement, but I am stating my truth… which is the fact that it is absolutely exhausting to make lemonade. Which led me to the following conversation:
Me: God, what if I don’t want lemons? What if for once I just want… oranges! Or grapes? Oranges are sweet, and with your touch can be made into an even sweeter tangier delight. For once I just want to win God, go from glory to glory. Instead of struggle to glory.
As I poured my heart out to God, he met me in my silly metaphoric rant about fruit, and he so tenderly whispered, “Daughter, what if the LEMONADE isn’t for you”. As I heard these words I was able to see beyond myself. I was able to see those around me, those desperate for a drink (John 4:10-14). In that moment I realized that the lemonade can be a blessing for others. I saw power in my story. I saw my struggles as a recipe for freedom, as a glimpse of hope for those with the same fears or scars.
Luke 8:39 says: “Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.
God does not intend for us to suffer, but if and when we do I know in my heart he can make any sour situation sweet. Therefore walk with the knowledge that there is power and freedom in your testimony for yourself and others.
I encourage you to make a list of the things God has helped you overcome, and then ask him: God, how can you use my testimony to bless my neighbor?
(I hope you find encouragement in these words. I invite you to share your testimony. Love you. -Irma)
