This past month, I had one of the most amazing experiences a coffee lover/ barista could ever have. This avid coffee drinker had the opportunity to host a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony, making Ethiopian coffee from scratch!!

So! Without further ado:

How To Host A Traditional Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony!!

  1. Rinse and scrub your raw coffee beans until the water runs clear.
  2. Put the raw beans on a metal plate and roast until brown. Make sure you blow the beans to remove any bean skin that sheds off. Dash with water when finished.
  3. Use a mortar and pestle (metal pole) and grind the beans. Now this can get a little dangerous if your not paying attention. Make sure you don’t stab your hand like I did.
  4. Pour the grinds into the pot, then pour hot water into it.
  5. Next sit it on the fire and fan the coals for more heat.
  6. After about 10 minutes, pour the coffee into tiny tea cups and don’t forget the heap fulls of sugar.
  7. Pray over it and serve all your guests.

This was one of my favorite experiences on the race. Sometimes, ministry doesn’t look like ministry at all. It was such a gift to get the opportunity to learn how to make coffee that way and then to do it with those beautiful women, who are sooo kind and funny. I got to serve them in a way I never expected. None of them spoke English, but the laughter and love that was displayed didn’t need words. They were all incredibly loving. Hugs and kisses all in your neck every time they see you. They were ammaaazziinnnggg women to be around, and I thank the Lord for allowing me such an unforgettable moment in time.
