I can clearly recall this day one year ago. I was in Darjeeling, India and was more homesick than ever. I found a dark and stuffy cyber cafe to check my email–I desperately hoped that some sort of communication from home would ease my homesickness. Little did I know that my life would dramatically change when I read this email from my bff Chelsea…

“i know what we should do with our lives. the world race. you go to 11 countries in a year. and do missions. and it sounds FREAKING AWESOME. check it out if you have time. theworldrace.org. there is one that leaves august 2009 and i want you, me, and april to all do it. they go to so many countries. the sample race route is mexico, guatemala, nicaragua, costa rica, argentina, peru, south africa, mozambique, swaziland, botswana, thailand, and china. ISNT THAT AWESOME!? ok lets go.”

My reply was as follows…

CHELSEA. I have been fa-reaking out for the last three days. Okay, so for the last few weeks I have been praying intensely about my future, asking God for some sort of direction. “I want to travel and learn and live in community. Could you work that all out for me please? I’ll be here–waiting for a nudge or shove or super cool website,” I wrote in my diary. The very next day I received your email with the link to the world race. You have no idea how passionate I am about this–it’s everything I want and more. Jesus is so alive.”

And now, I write to you from Thessaloniki, Greece, where I’m spending my day off. I’ve been on the world race for nearly two months.

God only knows where I’ll be or what I’ll be doing on this day next year.
