I think it’s the smell that hits you first. A mixture of sweat, bathrooms, and the outside. Then there are the colors; bright and bold. They are on buildings, clothing, signs, and fruit stands. There is so much going on you don’t know what to take in first. The streets are filled with people: Young ones running around barefoot and yelling, “how are you?” Men on bicycles (Boda Bodas) whizzing by taking passengers where ever they want to go. Women walking around with large loads of fruit and clothing on their heads. All the while this is going on people are calling out, “Mzungu!” at us, which is what they call white people.
Welcome to Africa! A place of bright colors, beautiful landscapes, and the most kind and generous people I’ve ever met. For the most part, what you hear about Africa is true…the bugs are awful, it’s really hot, and there is a lot of poverty. BUT what you don’t hear enough about are the people. Everyone greets you with a warm handshake and takes a sincere interest in you. There is no fake hello or how are you. They truly live in community and it is beautiful. Although some days I want to just give up because I am so sweaty and tired, God reminds me of how blessed I am to get to work with the people here. And that is really what I will remember. The bug bites will go away and the sun burn will fade, but I will never forget the joy and love the people of Africa have for life and for each other.
side note: We are actually staying in Kenya this month instead of Uganda. Although it was unexpected, I firmly believe God has us here for a purpose. We are living in Busia and working with a local church doing a variety of ministries including evangelism outreach, construction, and preaching. We are with team Oasis, and I absolutely love our contacts here!
