We have learnt MUCHO while being here in Argentina. Here are some of the most important and funny things you should know before doing ministry in this beautiful country. We speak from personal experience.
1. Nunca… call “dulce de leche” caramel. They are NOT EVEN CLOSE to being the same!
2. Siempre… greet people by kissing them on the cheek, not a firm handshake, that is much too formal. But beware… do not ACTUALLY kiss the cheek (unless they’re cute, then by all means), touch cheeks and make a kissing sound.
3. Nunca… allow the language barrier to stop you from engaging with others. Even if you know only 10 words in Spanish, they appreciate the effort. Whatever you say in SPANGLISH with love, they will receive as love.
4. Siempre… when you walk into a new place greet EVERYONE in the room, even if there are 76 people. KISS THEM ALL! Otherwise they will be offended.
5. Nunca… say “¡Si, se puede!” (Yes, you can!) because this phrase is associated with the President of Argentina. When you say this you are showing your support for him, while many people here are not fond of him. This is equal to saying “Make America great again!” in the U.S.
6. Siempre… put an “ita” or “ito” at the end of a word that you want to emphasize how endearing or cute something is. For example, if you like a girl you would call her “chiquitita” instead of just “chica” or “gatito” instead of “gato”.
7. Siempre… think of ways to be intentional with someone. You may have to FIGHT TO THE DEATH in order for them to accept your kindness, but it’s always worth it! From trying to buy someone dinner or just doing their dishes. They will have to swallow their pride and let you do it, but in the end they are extremely grateful.
8. Siempre… eat bread. Tortas for breakfast, baguettes with lunch, facturos with tea time, and ALL OF THE PIZZA at dinner. Don’t expect to not feel bloated until you leave the country. Deal with it… or STARVE!
9. Nunca… put an “a” at the end of a word when talking about a man. For example, Josesito should NUNCA be referred to as Josesita (unless you want to make fun of him).
10. Nunca… make the “Rock and Roll” symbol with your hands. In Argentina this is the sign for EL DIABLO. (We found this out the hard way!)
11. Siempre… have a fluent Spanish speaker look over your google translate before you share a message in front of the whole church. The translation is most likely NOT RIGHT.
12. Siempre… drink Yerba Mate. This is a communal drink that is served in a pequito goblet with a metal straw. If you are worried about the germs, DON’T BE, they will all be burned off (as well as your lips and tastebuds). Don’t like earthy green tea? Put another scoop of sugar in it and suck it up regardless, or else be found offensive. You won’t regret it!
