One night last week a group of us went out to a cafe for dinner. It was defiantly the place we should have been because we had planned to go somewhere totally different but that didn’t work out. So we headed to the only other place we knew. As we ordered and began talking we noticed a group of Mormon missionaries start to come in and order food. This sparked a conversation about what each person knew or didn’t know about the religion. Our amazing mentor decided to call them over to talk to them.
Two young men dressed in white shirts, black pants and ties walked over and sat down. One guy was from Zimbabwe (Z) and one from Colorado (W). As we exchanged beliefs and thoughts on Jesus I just couldn’t shake the look on W’s face. He was very uncomfortable and I felt he wasn’t sold on the whole Mormon thing. He grew up in it and it’s all he has ever known. Z on the other hand was very confident he was right and felt God had told him to become a Mormon. The team and I shared the things that the Holy Spirit was laying on our hearts over the next several minutes. Seeds were planted and it came down to Z said he respected our beliefs and was fine with it. We explained to him that while we respected him we could not be fine with all this because we cared and loved him and we know that if he doesn’t accept Jesus he will be continually deceived and spend eternity separated from God and that was not ok with us. It ended with our mentor looking at that precious young man from Colorado and telling him to get out before it’s too late. I loved her boldness!
I left with a heavy heart for all these young men. They told us they would be back at the cafe on Monday nights and we plan on seeing them again. The Lord has challenged me to pray bold prayers for the veil to fall and deception to be gone. The reality is God loves these young men so much that he sent his one and only son into this world to die for these guys. He was able to pay the price for their sin because, while human, he is also in fact fully God as well.
I encourage you to pray for Z and W when you get a chance and I also encourage you to engage in conversations with mormons and people of other religions. If you truly believe Jesus is the only way to God then you must tell these beautiful souls boldly the truth. Their eternity is at stake. Don’t ever forget that or take it lightly! Don’t just respect their belief and leave it at that. They are worth so much more than that. Show them how much you love them by telling them the truth in love. It could just change their life.
