Sunyani Ghana has been amazing. We got here on February 19th and on our first night it poured rain for the first time in MONTHS for Sunyani! We can already tell we are going to get two completely different experiences in Africa. In Cote D’Ivoire we lived in a small village compound with our hosts, and needed to constantly be with a translator due to the language barrier. Here in Ghana we are in a city, living in a hostel and really only see our hosts maybe 3 times a week if were lucky!!
We have a lot more independence in our ministry due to most people here speak English. While evangelizing we are able to speak directly to the community which is so interesting and exciting to connect on a different level.
Our main goal while here in Sunyani, is to reach the community, bring them the good news of Jesus and invite them to our services at Elim City Church. Elim City is the church we are partnering with for the month and we are trying to bring more People to the multiple services provided. Their church is continuously growing, and they separate some of their services throughout the week into 6 different congregations. A discipleship program is also provided to work one on one and build relationships with new individuals who come to the church. On Sunday they have 3 services, first one for students, second is in the local language Twi and the last is celebration service which is the largest.
Here in Sunyani we are not staying with a host family and have been extremely blessed to have AC, large beds and a hotel down the road with WiFi and a swimming pool. This was really hard for me to get used to at first. I love to meet and learn from the cultures and communities we are in and building relationships. I feel It is easier to do that when I am living life like them and not in an isolated hostel! (Luckily they do provide us with traditional food, which is delicious!!)
While evangelizing we are blessed to be able to hold amazing conversations with our assigned village Penkwazi. While roaming the streets talking about Jesus and Elim City we are able to go back multiple times a week making it possible to build relationships which is incredible!
A great opportunity we do have provided is being a part of different ministries through out the Sunday services. We can participate in the worship team, ushering, children’s ministry and the media team doing lights, filming and sound. I naturally was really excited for worship and as much as I wanted to sit out on joining the team, I couldn’t resist and quickly formed amazing bonds with their members!
Due to this month being our shortest, and all squad month I have really tried to dive into ministry as much as I can. I’ve really pushed myself to go out of my comfort zone and start conversations with people, pray over as many people as possible and share my story. I have gotten better at creating quiet time for me and the Lord to process and learn. As much as there is going on around me, I have been able to be okay with being alone and reading. It has been really refreshing.
Needless to say, Ghana is amazing, people are great and the only way to make sure you are blessing them as well as possible is to really just go all in, push yourself to participate in activities you would normally pass on and encourage yourself and team to always find ministry in whatever you end up doing!! I’m so excited for what Ghana has to offer for our squad!!
More to come! Please continue to pray for us and the communities we are working with!!
