Last Thursday morning I attended a conference called School of Power and Love. The vision of the conference is to see the power of Jesus demonstrated through the church. Basically, the sessions are focused on effectively sharing the message of eternal life through the leading and power of the Holy Spirit.
At the end of the session, we transitioned to a time of “Love in Action” which means that we were to take a couple hours and go out into the community to pray for people. The “not-so-confident” conference attendees were encouraged to find a “confident” attendee to partner up with. Naturally, I went to look for a “confident” person. Well, that backfired when all the “confident” people were taken. So, I was faced with a decision – go back to my seat and skip the exercise (no one would really be checking) or find someone, anyone, and go out.
Every moment of every day I have a choice – to skip the hard stuff or to go out and live a life on mission. A life on mission is filled with the purpose to bring God glory, not myself. A life on mission shares hope and love with every encounter. A life on mission is intentional with words, actions and how time is spent. A life on mission is not content with complacency, but is going to be uncomfortable, knowing that growth and endurance come during the hard stuff.
I saw a woman standing alone, probably in the same predicament as me, so I approached her. She too was “not confident” but she asked if I wanted to give it a try anyways. As we were speaking, two other “not confident” people approached us and we decided to go out together and give this a try. We didn’t exactly know what to do or what it would look like, but we were open to the Holy Spirit’s leading.
I got in a car with 3 strangers. I didn’t know them and they didn’t know each other, but we were about to pray for other strangers.
I would have missed out on the huge blessing of getting to know these 3 and seeing God work if I didn’t go. We prayed with firefighters, post office workers, a boyfriend/girlfriend couple, a pastor, a church, and for a community – all within a couple of hours! We did get rejected by some people, but that didn’t discourage us. Rather, it encouraged us to pray for the next encounter. Sometimes, you don’t know that people need prayer unless you ask. So, I’m asking you, what can I pray for you today?
Although we started out as strangers, we were reminded that we are brought together as brothers and sisters through Jesus. I’m looking forward to what the next 11 months will bring and am very excited to meet more brothers and sisters around the world.
