Just wanted to get a little bit of an update up and let you know some things that are going on with me.
I am in fact not in Lira, Uganda as indicated by the previous blog. In fact I am in Busia, Kenya. It sits right on the Kenyan-Ugandan border. Just like Kansas City there is actually a Busia, Kenya and a Busia, Uganda. That is cool. Some people actually went over to Uganda for our day off to go to the market there.
We are working with Deliverance Church here. We are doing a wide variety of things from constructing a building for the children of the church to have classes in (right now their time is spent out in the sun where they excitedly learn about the Bible and sing praises to their Lord), we do door to door evangelism, where we have seen several people pray for Jesus to be their Lord, we help with worship services on Sundays and visit schools, prisons and hospitals.
We are definitely having a lot of fun. I am well on my way to developing the farmers’ tan again (get excited).
We are getting to know our contacts very well. They spend a lot of time at the house with us watching movies, teaching us swahili and how to cook chapati and about the struggles that ministries face in Kenya.
Sometimes (and by that I mean any time I am walking outside of our home) I feel like a movie star as little kids will come from all over and yell “Muzungu, how are you?” and excitedly come to shake your hand. I mean seriously kids just run up to you to shake your hand and then run away (some of them have never seen a white person- we have only made a few children cry with the pasty appearance).
It has also been a lot of fun for me because we do get large groups of kids that just flock to us. We have had lots of time playing games and just having fun with random kids from whatever neighborhood we are in. Sometimes, we play with whatever they have constructed into a soccer ball, sometimes we sing songs like the hokey pokey and Father Abraham and sometimes we just play tag (which allows for the ever coveted catch ’em and hug ’em time). That is probably my favorite time in Kenya so far.
Anyway, I just wanted to get you updated as to which country I actually am in. We will be back in Nairobi at the end of the month for debrief.
