While in Swaziland a few people started a bible study where you can pose any question about theology to the group and then the first step we do is take 10-15 or so minutes to search through the bible to see what it says about that question. Then we base our answers or best educated guesses because we realize that we cannot contain God’s unfathomable plan inside our tiny brains.
So, that platform has given me the opportunity to ask questions about what I am reading in my bible and what I have been told that I have glanced over before and stop to ask, “why?”, “why do we believe this?” “Where is this actually backed up in scripture?” And to ask unashamedly, “This does not make sense to me, can you please help me find clarity?”
So one core value that I have been told all of my life is that Jesus came as the fulfillment of the law. But why? How can a being fulfill a set of written laws? The two didn’t match up in my mind.
So I have had the question for a while but to be honest was nervous to bring it up because it’s kind of a crucial value and pillar of our faith. So I was just reading through Romans 13:9-8 “the fulfillment of the law is love” one morning at devos and my mind was blown!
BECAUSE if you love those around you, everyone essentially, all the time and treat them with respect you won’t do wrong against them, therefore never break the law. This is impossible for mere humans because of sin which is why Jesus had to come.
This points to Jesus’ purpose of coming to earth. Matthew 5:17 “I have not come to abolish the law but to fulfill them.” Because Jesus is the expression of God’s love, and God is love! therefore Jesus being love is the fulfillment of the law.
God created us out of love, and sacrificed himself out of love so that could be redeemed and saved through his love. Colossians 1:22 “he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death in order to present you Holy and blameless”
God is love therefore the fulfillment is the law and Jesus the son of God also being God is the fulfillment of the law. It is finished that is all there is to it. If we accept his love and that he died on the cross a painful humiliating death for all the people that would ever walk this earth past present and future because he loves us so so deeply than we become blameless and pure in his eyes.
