My whole life I have played sports:  I played soccer when I was 6.  After that, I played basketball for years.  I ran track, I played volleyball and I coached volleyball as well.  During all these years of playing and coaching sports I noticed that there are two types of players.  The type of player who won’t apply the things the coach teaches them and the type of player who does.  The coachable players are usually the ones that prosper in the sport.  They take the advice from someone with the knowledge and apply that knowledge to better their abilities.

This may seem like a weird way to start off a blog post, but the other day this concept hit me and I needed to share.

So imagine that we are all playing a game, pick a sport, any sport, and our Coach is God.  He has played this game before and mastered it (John 16:33- But be of good cheer, I have overcome the world).  He is trying to help us better our game.  However unless you actually listen to what God tells you to do in your game, your abilities and life won’t get better. (1 Corinthians 15:58- Be steadfast immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord)

Recently I had a very hard realization hit me: My identity isn’t fully in Christ. I have been going through a lot of adjustments to rebuild my foundation in Christ.  A lot of people have told me that I’m doing so well.  That they are surprised that I haven’t resisted this change and that the way I am chasing after God so strongly is awesome.  My response to this was “I’ve always been coachable.”  As funny as that was in the moment it is so true.

I have had to give up so much in these two months:

God brought up how my form of communication can be toxic, so we fixed that and it is a daily choice.

God brought up that I built my identity in man and the approval of man.  So I gave up everything that was holding me back from fully having my identity in Christ.  This one was very hard for me.  Being a Christian on the World Race, you assume that your identity is in Christ and finding out that it wasn’t fully gave me a sense of urgency to fix it.

God also brought up something that I had blacked out from when I was younger.  Many roots of how I see myself are embedded in this.  God brought this up now because He knew that I would not have handled it well before now.  He knew the exact moment I needed to find out, and that’s when he told me.  (1 Corinthians 10:13  God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able.)

So I say all of this in hopes that it gives someone a nudge in the right direction.  Don’t walk after God, RUN.  The time is now; the game is being played and in order to win you must follow God’s coaching.  Just ask Him, “Put me in Coach”
