The Sagrada Familia was designed by Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926) and has been in a state of constant construction since 1882. The estimation of its completion is between 2017 and 2026, depending upon who you source on this. This cathedral is my favorite from all others that I have visited, thus far.
I was able to visit this Roman Catholic cathedral for the first time on a rainy October afternoon in 2005 and again for my 20th birthday, which was one of the most beautifully sun-drenched spring days in my memory. The first time I set my eyes on this masterpiece-in-process, I was in awe. I was also overwhelmed. So many details, so little time. From the towers that stood like palm trees to the life-like sculptures that showed the nativity, passion, and glory façades to the verses sculpted in the stone to the designs interwoven throughout…I did not know where to look first, but I did know that I did not want to look away.
When was the last time I felt this way about Jesus? Even as I stood there, finally resting my gaze on the front door, which had Jesus’ name highlighted in (actual) gold, surrounded by the names of His earthly family members, I was reminded of how easily distractions have interlaced themselves into my daily life. Now, years later, I question myself: When was the last time my focus was clearly and irrevocably upon Christ?
