“Continue Your Mission”—Grandmother Sara Obama

Along with seven of our good friends, we spent Thursday traveling to Buno, the providence two hours away from our town of Kisumu. Our main purpose was to visit with President Obama’s Grandmother, but we also visited a friend’s country home and enjoyed a brief stay at the shore of Lake Victoria, where children played, fish were caught, and water gathered by nearby villagers.

While we talked with Grandmother Sara, Leisa asked for her advice. Without a hesitation and through her nephew’s patient translation (she only speaks Lao and Swahili), she told us to “continue your mission.” I was instantly reminded of the great commission at the end of Matthew. Jesus basically said the same to His disciples. Grandmother Sara’s words haunt me in a lasting and encouraging way even now:

“Continue your mission.”

These words ring true to all Christ-followers everywhere, no?  It does not matter if you are in Nashville playing the drums, L.A. and in school, D.C. as a White House intern, or Naperville as a consultant. Jesus desires for you to “continue your mission” as His son or daughter—“to go into all nations,” all cities, all communities, all homes.

What are you waiting for?“Continue Your Mission”—Grandmother Sara Obama
