I laid there, staring at the tin ceiling, counting the minutes until the next meal. Every so often I would hear the shuffling of a sleeping bag or a chips wrapper, but other than that, the droning sound of my watch ticking each second sunk deep into my ear drums. Being under house arrest while the Honduran riots raged on lasted 10 days too long. As our snacks and movies ran out we resulted in age-old idea of conversing with each other. Yes, it got that bad.
In all seriousness, though, I look back on being trapped in that cold, cinder block room with six other girls with such gratitude. I laughed some of my hardest laughs in that room. I had some of the most intimate times with the Lord in that room. I also had some of the most meaningful conversations in that room. One of those conversations was with my amazing teammate Bekah Monroe.
While everyone was taking their afternoon siesta, I sat up on my creaky bunk and saw Bekah just sitting there with her headphones in. In that moment I thought to myself, “Well, I could either continue making myself go stir crazy and stay on this thin mattress while my bum gets numb or I could hang out with Bekah.” Next thing you know Bekah and I are sitting on a makeshift tire swingset talking and admiring the breathtaking mountains of Honduras. The Lord blessed me by Bekah Monroe that day, and He is continuing to do so.
Bekah is the real deal. Her extremely tender heart has compassion on every person she meets. Her heart of gold senses others’ hurts and pains and immediately intercedes on their behalf. Whether it is a homeless woman crippled on the dirty streets of Cambodia or a man without legs selling paintings to provide for his family, her first instinct is to go up to them and pray for them. She understands the power prayer has. She knows the Lord intently listens and hears her prayers, no matter how many times she feels her answer is to wait. No matter how many lies Satan tries to deceive her with, she stands firm on the Truth in that the Lord loves her and is faithful to give her what she needs when she needs it.
In order for Bekah to stay on the field, she needs to raise $1,151 by January 29th. That may seem like a big number, but we serve a faithful God. And because Bekah trusts in the promise that the Lord hears and answers her prayers, she is putting her hope in that faithful God. The Lord delights in our bold prayers because ultimately we are giving up our control of a situation and completely trusting it into Christ’s hands. And that is the best position to be in. Fully surrendering everything to the One who gave His life as a ransom for us.
This month, as Bekah digs deeper into what it looks like surrendering more of herself to God, she is learning to depend on Him for everything. Including her funds to finish the World Race. That’s a beautiful thing. One step into boldly living alongside trusting in the Lord’s faithfulness is praying and believing God will provide every last penny for Bekah. So, as I am praying with confidence that the Lord will provide, I’m asking you to join me. Pray for the funds to flood into her account. Pray for Bekah to be filled with an inexpressible peace as she fights to trust in the Lord. And lastly, I humbly ask that you prayerfully consider financially supporting her. You may not know her, but the Lord does and she is His beloved, as well as your sister in Christ. Let’s be the church.
