If you’ll allow me, I would love to share one of my favorite stories from the time I worked as a counselor at a camp two summers ago that left an impact on me.

Every night after saying goodnight to my campers, I would go sit outside on the porch and host what we called “porch talks.” This provided an opportunity for my campers to come outside and have a one-on-one conversation with me. Here they could talk about anything and everything, ask any question, express any doubts, or just have some girl-chat.

One night I had a camper who was around 8 or 9 years old join me on the porch. She immediately began talking about how much she loved the stars and began pointing out to me some of the constellations. She told me stories about the constellations and how they landed in the stars. Let me remind you, this girl was 8 or 9 years old! But she was quite clearly in love with the night sky.

An idea suddenly popped into my head. I looked at her and said, “I want to show you something.” We held hands as I grabbed a towel hanging on the edge of the porch and walked to the grass by the front of the cabin. I laid out the towel and the two of us laid on our backs as we both looked up at the stars.

I turned her and said, “look at all of those stars! Look at how big the sky is and how many stars there are! Those stars are so big! And God made every single one of them! God has a special name for each of them and he remembers each one’s name! The very same God who used his hands to create all of those stars reached down to earth and used those hands to make you! Those hands made your toes, your nose, your smile, and your heart. Isn’t that awesome?”

And for the first time, this sweet little girl was speechless.

I think about this night a lot and how it’s rare that I’ll look at what God has created and be speechless. Rarely do I ever link the fact that the God who created the stars, created me.

The God who has woven history has written my future. The God who knows how many grains of sand are on this planet knows how many hairs are on my head. And WOW!

So here is one of my 2018 resolutions; whenever I feel so bogged down by everything happening in this life, I will look up and remember that my God is bigger. He is capable, loving, and infinitely bigger than any problems I face.

I want to be speechless.
