Hi Everyone!
I’ve gotten lots of questions about how on EARTH I am going to pack for an entire year in to a bag! I also know that throughout my own packing journey, packing lists were my best friend. So if you are about to embark on the World Race as well, this is for you!
The items below are everything I am bringing on my 11 month mission as well as to my 11 day Training Camp. If it is highlighted in YELLOW, I did NOT bringing it to Training Camp.
Gear
- Tent: REI Co-Op Passage 2 Tent…Would definitely suggest a 2 person so you can comfortably fit yourself and your pack.
- Footprint: REI Co-Op Passage 2…Keeps the bottom of your tent away from the elements.
- Sleeping Bag: REI Co-Op Helio Down 45 Degree…This is a great happy medium between not too cold and not too hot. During Training camp, I had a 35 Degree bag and it was just a tad too hot. But my sleeping bag liner wasn’t warm enough! I decided to scrap them both (BTW, I love REI’s return policy. You can return things a year after purchase even if it had been used. Highly suggest getting most of your gear from there!) and go for a 45 degree bag. Hopefully this will be a winner. Also, don’t be afraid that its down…its water-resistant!
- Sleeping Pad: Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Ultra…Super comfortable and doesn’t deflate while you’re sleeping.
- Sleeping Pad Pump: Big Agnes Pump House…the sleeping pad I chose has to be blown up and the first time I blew this pad up I did it by mouth and I about passed out. Definitely needed this for Training Camp, as we had to set up and take down camp every day. I could probably get away with not taking this on the race, since I would theoretically only have to blow it up once a month when we move countries. However, it can also be used as a dry bag!
- ENO: DoubleNest Hammock + Suspension System…My ENO did not come with the suspension system (straps) so I have linked that as well! I ended up sleeping in this for the majority of Training Camp. Its sooo comfy.
- Pack: Deuter Aircontact Lite 60+10…I love this pack! Super comfortable. Packs are definitely individualized so I would 100% suggest going to REI and getting an associate to fit you before buying!
- Day Pack: REI Co-Op Ruckpack 28…I started with an 18L day pack and it was wayyyy too small for me. Pretty much just held my computer. This pack is the perfect size and has lots of compartments to stay organized.
- Airporter: Sea To Summit Pack Convertor (Medium)…From what I’ve heard, Osprey doesn’t hold up as well. This convertor comes highly recommended.
- Raincover: REI Co-Op Duck’s Back Rain Cover-60L…Its very possible your pack could be stored on top of a bus while traveling during a torrential down pour. Don’t skip this.
- Pillow: Thermarest compressible pillow.
- Packing Cubes: Calpak 5 Piece Packing Cube Set…I cannot STAND things to be all willy nilly in my pack. Organization is essential. *Enter packing cubes*
- Mosquito Net…I have been told these are typically provided in countries where mosquitos are a threat. However, can’t hurt to be prepared!
- Towel: Turkish Towel
- Water bottle: Hydroflask 40 Oz. At first, I was concerned that this might be too big. However, I love not having to fill it up as often. It still fits in the pockets of my big pack and day pack!
- Utility Cord: PMI Cord 4mm (Sold by the inch-I got 15 inches!)
- Carabiners Multipack
- TSA Locks
- Headlamp: Petzl Tikkina Headlamp …I suggest you keep this in your day pack throughout the entirety of training camp. When you walk back to your camp site after session, its pitch black. I can’t tell you how many times I needed my headlamp to find my headlamp.
*compression sacks: I would definitely suggest getting all of your essential gear before buying a ton of these. A lot of my gear came with compression sacks or packed small enough where I felt like the stuff sack was compressed enough.
Electronics:
- Laptop: Macbook Air 13”
- Laptop Charger
- Laptop Case
- Dry sack for laptop: Sea To Summit…The 20L was a great size for my laptop plus a few things (i.e. journal, bible) that I didn’t want to get wet!
- Phone
- Phone Charger
- Powerbank: Mophie XL…This is AWESOME. It holds 4 full charges!
- Universal Adapter
- Africa Adapter…I wasn’t able to find a universal adapter that had Africa built in so I choose Type M in addition to the adapter above.
- 5-Way Headphone Splitter…To share music or watch movies through headphones with your teammates.
- 3 Pairs of Headphones…I am notorious for loosing these so I am going prepared!
- Lightning to headphone jack (AKA “dongle”)…You can buy headphones that have this built in, but then you can’t use it with your computer. Don’t forget these if your iPhone doesn’t have a headphone jack! There is nothing worse than getting on a plane, going to plug in your headphones and realizing you forgot these!
- 2T External Hard drive…You’ll want to back up pictures/video on this! Its also great for sharing movies between teammates.
