At training camp, the world race really stressed the importance of being wise with our phones and with our cameras. They wanted to tell us that if we are on this grand journey for the cool instagram photos, we are in it for the wrong reason. So for all of month one we had a phone fast which was so beneficial (although there’s no wifi at the base anyway so there’s no use for my phone)!
But as month two rolled around we were encouraged to discern our boundaries with phones. If you know me, you know I love photos and I love story telling (I got it from my mama), so I naturally wanted to hop right into taking photos to show everyone my new home. But I know that I want to respect my ministry and my Guatemala family so much that I limit myself with my phone usage and my urge to take photos every second. God gave the world such beautiful gift when he made Bola de Oro and Chimaltenango, so I refrain from posting a whole bunch about it so I can keep it special to my hosts and my team.
In order to get at least a peek of the hidden gems we get to spend our time in here are some special photos from the past months that reflect the heart of this beautiful community.
Riding on the back of pickup trucks is Team Esther’s favorite pastime! Our friends always give us rides whenever we need it!
Melisa and I are always having fun at la casa de Josefina! We all love to take turns holding her and giving her tons of hugs and kisses!
There’s a beautiful flower field right by Josefina’s house! In this photo I am holding one of our favorite snacks called helados locos (crazy ice cream), which is a pineapple popsicle with lime, salt, and pepino! Super yum!
Josefina taught us how to make authentic Guatemalan Chuchitos! I want to be just like her when I grow up. She has a heart of gold!
Melisa and Brandon are PRECIOUS! We have had such a fun time connecting with them with our time so far. Melisa has a quiet and meek spirit and she already carries the kindness of God with her. Brandon is such a leader! Although he is ornery, he loves to work hard and play even harder.
My favorite thing to do is buy 5-10 bananas in the market in Chimaltenango for about 3 quetzales (which is a fraction of a dollar!!) Chels snapped this photo on the public van on the way back to the base.
I am so grateful God gives us the gift of posting about our lives and keeping special parts of our lives to ourselves. I am so grateful for my family here in Guatemala and how they bless me beyond measure.
Peace and blessings,
Hannah Keller
