Have you ever felt like you didn’t know who you are? Not knowing if you had a purpose or not? Found yourself turning to worldly things in order to fill a hole so large that only God could fill?
While at debrief last weekend me and a few of my friends were on a boat on our way across lake Atitlán when we met a girl named Erica. Erica is from Chicago but she moved to San Pedro 4 months ago. When Erica saw us she immediately wanted to talk. She could tell we were from America and she told us how she doesn’t get to talk to Americans much since moving to Guatemala. As we talked to Erica my heart broke for her. San Pedro is very much a party town and she told us the reason she moved there was because she wanted to party and she wanted to find herself. Throughout our conversation I just kept praying for her and asking the Lord to give me the words to say. While I wish I could say that her life turned around right there and she accepted Christ, that’s not what happened. But I can say with full confidence that it was not a coincidence that we were on the same boat. Seeds were planted in Erica that day. Seeds that will one day flourish and produce good fruit.
After talking with Erica, I started to think about how people often live their lives. We spend so much time and energy searching for the things to fill us up. People turn to drugs, alcohol, sex, money, other people, and so many more things, but ultimately those things fail us. We have such a large hole in our lives that can not be filled up with worldly things.
Even though nothing we could ever do could fill this massive hole in our hearts, God can fill that hole. When we follow what He has for us. God brings us into places that satisfy the deepest desires of our hearts where we find pure joy in Him. So if you are in a place of searching and seeking for what might fill you up, stop looking. Go to the Lord and He will fill you in every way possible.
