“Don’t Do Anything for God. He doesn’t need you.”
Our host, David spoke this over my squad on the first night we arrived in Honduras. My internal defense immediately built up a wall. What did he mean? I shouldn’t do anything for God, AND he doesn’t need me? If He called me to be a missionary, and travel the world to serve Him, how could he not need me? But as David continued to explain this statement I had a change of heart, and am now learning how to walk in that truth.
The fact of the matter is, He doesn’t need any of us. He has all the power to bring about healing and change in this world by himself. But he created us, so we get the OPPORTUNITY to walk with Him. He could feed all the hungry, care for all those who are sick, lead a mass, and even catch fish for a village. But how boring would that be? He designed His kingdom for all of us to serve each other.
Another blow to the pride… being a missionary doesn’t make me special. While it glorifies the Lord and spreads His word, it is not the only occupation that is needed for success in His kingdom. It’s amazing to fulfill ones calling that solely speaks on Christ, but it’s just as important to bring LIGHT to those areas in our own communities who don’t have as much of Jesus. We need teachers, nurses, physical therapists, hotel door men, public officials, farmers, accountants and babysitters. Doing good work is meaningless to the Lord, if you don’t include Him in your day and the job. I’ve spent so much time with an anxious heart trying to discern what I should do for my career. But after this revelation, I’ve lost my worry as in what to do, and shifted my focus on just living with God. It’s not about me, but how I can best serve His kingdom and include Him in my life.
If you are struggling to ever find joy or worth in your occupation, I encourage you to shift your FOCUS and allow the Lord to reveal how you can just be, with Him.
