Sometimes my heart is so buried in my chest that it feels like it will never come close enough to the surface to reach into it again. Why is it that when we feel like we’re sinking, falling deeper and deeper, that finally we learn to breathe again? When life is crushing in around us that somehow, someway, the sun breaks through? Everything we thought we knew, we don’t know anymore, and everything we were certain we didn’t know, hangs right there like a light bulb burning bright into the evening. Life is a mystery, always full of surprises and complicated messes. As crazy as it may get, one thing I’ve found will always ring true, is God. He was, He is, and will be, I AM.
Have you ever wondered if that last statement was true? I have… and I’m not ashamed to admit it. If you doubt something but never search it out then what does that leave you with? Uncertainty.
In all my searching here’s what I’ve found.
If there was no God, there’d never be a light at the end of the tunnel. There’d be no reason for living, or desire to do good. After all, if there was no God, there would be no such thing as good or bad, because there’d be no God to judge between the two. Right and wrong would be obsolete. We would love ourselves more than those surrounding us. We wouldn’t even think twice about making decisions because there’d be no real consequences for anything. If we died.. so what? I mean really if you think about it, life after death would merely be darkness, nothing more than nothing. There would be no eternity to live for, just your hopeless 80 some-odd years right now.
But the good news for everyone is that THERE IS a God! There is a God who calls us to live for more than ourselves, to love our neighbors as ourselves. There is a God who judges us according to truth, not because He hates us, but because He loves us so very much and wants what’s best for us. There is a God who wants desperately to give us an eternity of life, but He has also given us free will to choose.
Life is a funny thing but God will always bring clarity in the midst of confusion when we look through His eyes. When we seek Him we will find Him when we seek Him with all of our hearts. He’s the reason we keep on breathing even when we feel like we’re drowning, how we can see the sunrise from under the deepest pile of rubble. You can’t tell me there isn’t a God. He brings us hope in a hopeless situation every single day. He gives us life and life more abundantly. But it’s our choice to accept or decline. I accept. What about you?
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
John 10:10For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16
