*Disclaimer*  Internet here in Camotan, Guatemala is very slow and
it takes way too long to upload pictures, so there will not be any
pictures on my blog for awhile.  My teammate Scottie has taken over 600
photos and as soon as we get to a place where the internet is decent
she is going to upload them and I will then take them from her.  So,
you have to wait for awhile.  Sorry!   Enjoy this “What We Have Been Up To” Blog for now without photos…..

Hello there!  I am sitting in an internet cafe in
Camotan, Guatemala, where I have been for approximately one week (the
town, not the internet cafe).  Camotan is a small town in the south
east part of Guatemala, just about 30 minutes from the Honduras
border.  I am also about 30 minutes from Chiquimula, the third largest city in Guatemala.
Myself and 12 others, arrived here last Saturday, June 6th to be exact,
after 8 hours divided between 2 bus rides from Panajachel.  All of us
are working with Servant Ministries and staying at the organizations
home base.  We actually have beds, real showers, and (are ready for
this?) a pool!  What?!  Did I just say a pool?  Yes, yes I did.  We
were all shocked when we found this out.  Every morning at 625am we
walk down to Anna and Marcos’ house and have breakfast.  They are a
wonderful welcoming couple who have been cooking us our breakfast,
lunch and dinner every day.  They live literally one minute down the
road.  I have been able to taste authentic Guatemalan cuisine-
tortillas, rice, black beans in various forms, all kinds fruit juice,
and many different chicken dishes to name a few.  One night we even had
ice cream!

At 7am every morning we begin our ministry for
the day.  Servant Ministries has provided us with numerous different
opportunities this past week with even more possibilities in the coming
weeks.  On Sunday we were able to help out with two different church
services, one in the morning and one at night.  We sang a few songs in
Spanish (yes, I learned 3 songs in Spanish!), performed a drama, and a
couple people shared their testimonies.  Over the next couple of
Sundays we will be doing similar programs at other churches around the
area.  Also, this past week I found myself doing construction for 2.5
days with one more day left to go.  Many of you who know me probably
don’t think of me as a construction worker but by the end of the first
day I was a pro at pulling nails out of wooden boards.  Myself and 4
others were able to help out with the building of a medical center that
will be part of Servant Ministries.  It has been hard work, partly
because I am not used to construction and partly because its wicked hot
here and the sun shines down so very much on my white skin.  But,
despite sweating more then I ever have before in my life, I have
actually enjoyed working with my construction team- we have been able
to really encourage each other and just make it fun by singing Disney
songs all day long.

Today I was given a break from construction and
had a chance to visit 4 different mountain village schools.  We
delivered a mid-year school supply pack to the kids- I have never seen
kids so excited for paper and pencils before.  It was truly an opening
experience at how incredibly blessed we are in the United States.  This
kids have little to nothing and they treasure the two pads of paper and
three pencils we gave them like it was gold.  I distinctly remember one
girl holding the little bag against her chest the entire time we were
there and was still gripping onto it as we drove away.  Hopefully I’ll
be able to share more about this ministry in a future blog, but my hour
of internet time is basically up so I need to get going!  Goodbye my faithful readers!
