Not much happened on this long travel day, but I like to keep track anyway.  If you're a nerd like me and schedules and details are important, then read along about our travel day from Kathmandu, Nepal to Nairobi, Kenya.  My squad is in Nairobi until Friday for a debrief period then Team Deep Roots moves on to do ministry with Moses in Kitale, Kenya!

  • 3:30am – wake up to alarm/in denial/hair still wet from shower earlier/freezing cold!
  • 3:45am – Get up already!
  • 3:57am – downstairs with all my luggage
  • 4:07am – on bus beside my buddy Taryn
  • 4:18am – bus leaves
  • 4:38am – arrive at airport, find out that the doors don’t open til 6am. 🙁
  • 5:05am – boredom + fatigue = races with the luggage carts in the parking lot.
  • 5:32am – realize I’ve forgotten to brush my teeth and put on deodorant.
  • 5:33am – dig through my pack and take care of personal hygiene on the sidewalk.
  • 6:20am – weigh my pack (and myself just for fun)
  • 6:45am7:43am – sitting/waiting/spending our last bit of rupees on some team Oreos   at the store/watching Home Alone 2 on a nearby TV
  • 8:30am – flight delayed because of fog, free hot breakfast and mango juice box
  • 10:42am – Security check #1 – lady asks me if I have scissors or a lighter in my carry on.  Being the honest person that I am I reply, “Yea.”  She confiscates my safety scissors that are 2 inches long, round tipped, pink handled…that I’ve owned since like 3rd grade.
  • 8:40am – 2:30pm – multiple announcements and further delays.
  • 12:30 – 1:15pm – Settlers of Catan game with Sarah, Kelly and Frank.  Frank wins as usual.  Nepali airport workers walk by and give us some thumbs up and smiles for playing such an unusual game.
  • 1:51pm – return through security for a free (and spicy) lunch.
  • 2:30pm – Security check #2.  We enter the wrong line, which is apparently only for men.  We are redirected and since we’ve already waited 30 minutes are allowed in the middle of the adjacent line.  Other people get angry, chaos ensues, lots of profanity in many different languages.
  • 3:38pm – awake for 12 hours, still waiting.
  • 5:57pm – boarding the plane!
  • 6:29pm – in the air!
  • Sometime on board – In flight meal with rice, chicken, a tasty roll and Sprite.
  • 11:40pm – land in the Kingdom of Bahrain.  (time changed to 8:55pm)
  • 8:55 – 9:30pm – walk straight through the airport, security and up to boarding gate.  Just made it!
  • 10:10pm – take off
  • 11:20pm – dinner #2 (which we all accepted!)  lamb, rice, bean salad, a roll and some cheese spread?
  • 2:47am – Nairobi!
  • 3:42am – paperwork and waiting for a Visa
  • 4:57am – bus arrives at our hostel.
  • 5:38am – Sleep 🙂
