If you’ve known me for two hot seconds in America..you know i like clean sheets. I prefer to shower everyday. And if your shoes are dirty then please don’t wear them in the house.

They told me that the race was gonna push me. They told me that I was gonna be outta my comfort zone. And y’all – I was ready. I was fully prepared to sleep in my tent and not get to use my curling iron for 11 months. I was even almost accepting to the idea that my scale wouldn’t look the same when I came home.

But what was I not ready for?

Feet.

Washing feet in particular.

We went to backyard bible study and I was so excited to see these sweet babies. I look forward to the smiles and the laughter as these bright eyed and wired little ninos chatter nonstop about I don’t know what due to my lack of espanol. (classes can only do SO much…) Beforehand we talked about doing a skit on Jesus washing the feet of the disciples. Joe, as our designated Jesus, got the bucket and the rag and off we went. The skit went great and the babies were loving it.

Then we all got cups and rags. We were all gonna split up and wash feet of the kids that came to backyard bible study. It honestly embarrasses me to think that I didn’t want to do it. You see, I’m not a feet person. They are totally not my favorite thing.

I walked to the back row and knelt down next to a little girl with pink shoes. One flip flop was broken. Her feet were caked in dirt. She had a shy smile as she held up her 5 little piggies. It took all that I had not to break down. It hit me hard that this is not about me. I am here to serve. In all capacities. Even when this literally means washing feet. I have never really thought about Jesus literally washing feet before. It’s always just been a bible story. But sometimes life is funny and with a plastic cup and a kitchen rag your attitude can transform from zero to a hundred just like that.

Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. John 13:16-17
