I walked in a parade! The school I work at this month invited my team and I to walk in the Guatemala Independence Day parade with the students. It was more amazing than I imagined. Also much more hilarious than anticipated. Im not sure if us gringas “white girls” were in the parade or were the parade! We had photos and videos taken of us, local news stations following us and many, many people laughing and clapping for/at us! What an experience to feel so different. Sometimes in the USA I feel like differences no longer exist because we have come so far. Although hate may have gone away, the mere reality of being “different” is still present and always will be. It is refreshing to be put in a situation where I am the different one, the minority. I appreciate that because it shows me how others may feel in various situations and really broadens my acceptance of others feelings and view points. I’m growing people… it may not be vertical ..feel free to laugh here…. but my heart is growing, and rapidly.
