I’ve been on the field for about a week now, and I am absolutely loving it. I honestly don’t think I was expecting to love Cambodia as much as I do. Between the architecture, the people, the kids at the orphanage, and the overall culture, this country has completely won my heart.
So what have we been up to?
Everyday looks a little bit different here in Kampong Cham, Cambodia. We wake up around 4:30 am many days due to all the roosters that surround our host’s house. It has completely blown my mind how you can totally reinvent your sleep schedule when you move to the other side of the world. We teach English to the younger kids at 2:00 every afternoon and at 6:30 for the older kids. Apart from that, our ministry changes depending on the day. Sometimes we ride bikes with the kids to nearby temples, and other times we go on prayer walks. We also have a whole list of projects to complete. We are currently trying to raise money to renovate the girls’ side of the orphanage because it needs work, and our supply budget doesn’t have the funds. If you feel inclined to donate, I will share how to do that at the bottom of this blog! On the weekends, we have the opportunity to lead sermons and worship for the orphanage, and it has been so fun to see them all engage in what the Lord has to show them through my team. Saturday is our “off day”, so this past weekend we went into the city of Kampong Cham. We visited a temple that is inhabited by a whole bunch of monkeys. We got to feed them and explore the temple, which was so awesome. After that, we went to a coffee shop that helps save women of all ages from human sex trafficking. Our time is already going so quickly here, but I am so excited to see what’s in store for the rest of our time in Cambodia.
Apart from all the fun and excitement, the Lord has already been teaching me a lot since I’ve been here. I’ve struggled a lot of my life and still struggle with comparing myself to other people. He’s recently been teaching me how to praise others for the spiritual gifts they have, and how to appreciate my own. Through that, He’s really been showing me what it looks like to love myself. I’ve realized that He’s made me exactly who I am because he wants that person for His kingdom. How cool is it to be WANTED by the King of Heaven? And because of that, it makes me want to be exactly who I am because that’s who He calls me to be and who He needs me to be. While I’m a far cry from perfect and mess up all the time in even simple things such as keeping up with daily devotions, I’ve been rejoicing in the fact our faith isn’t defined by the flawed disciples, but by the perfect God. And if our perfect God can call me a masterpiece, then I will surely believe Him.
